Garlic update: Sept

Image
Followup to post...  garlic-is-in-for-2019 Started regular fertilising with seaweed tea Seaweed has been stewing away all winter. I pour it straight through the mesh cover. Popped the mesh cover ( garlic-now-under-cover ) to do some weeding

Every gardener seems to have a nemesis

I have a couple and one of them is potatoes, so I'm giving them another go...

Lemon update: Augest

Image
This is my first decent harvest since I dropped these plants into the ground four summers back. There is so much fruit I'm a bit concerned that the trees won't get decent leaf growth to recover from the winter pruning. Decided to clean off some fruit despite a lot of them not being fully ripened. I'm processing all the juice into ice cubes

Next big earthworks project: Providing more soil for the apple trees

Image
My apple trees sit in a sand dune. One of the ongoing projects at my place is the replacement of sand with decent soil. When I originally planted the trees I dug out a bowl for each, and filled it with soil. Last year I dug out some large holes between the trees which you can read about here... earthworks-continued-or-learn-to-eat I've begun to join the islands of compost together so the eventually the trees will sit in a large patch of dark nutritious water retaining soil.       Once the holes are dug I throw in some branches for some long term rotting. Up the other end of the row, I've done the same thing cutting a trench around the tree.     Once the channels are dug, I fill them in with the composted stuff pulled from the two centre patches. These are now holes in the ground again, ready for fresh material to be thrown in. Here you can see the colour difference between the sand and the decent stuff.

Just got the pruning done in time

Garlic in a pot

A mate didn't have enough time to make up a decent plot out in the garden, so they are giving it a go in a pot.

Pruning the grape vines

Image
Finished the major prune on the three grapevines next to the patio. Last years crop was disappointing. I'm shooting for fruit and shade.    I'm keeping some long cordons running across under the plastic. The hope is that fruiting buds appear along the lengths. This post from Kath Irvine arrived a bit late for me  how-to-prune-a-grape  but I think I've hit all her points.
