Vivid winter festival : 2012 : Sydney : Australia

I think this could be the best light sculpture walk ever (and we shall never speck of 2010 again.) These installations are neon like which reminds me of Las Vegas, but more arty and less tacky. A few more pieces that encourage interaction this year. Kids were having a grand o time. Much more music too. Walsh bay has been added but I miss the Observation hill location which appears in the 2009 video below.

Driving from Lake Pukaki to Mt Cook : New Zealand

Image
Last Christmas I hired a car from the warzone that is Christchurch and went for a drive to explore the South Island. Ended up parked in a lookout staring up the lenth of Lake Pukake. Decided to drive up to Mt. Cook to check out a mountain (we don't really have proper mountains in Oz) I mounted the GoPro on the windscreen and turned onto Mt. Cook Road (video and map below). Stopped at a lookout...

Why is it less noisy sitting in front of the engines?

Image
Recently I've enjoyed a series of seat allocations where I've found myself sitting infront of the planes wings. I've noticed an appreciable lowering of noise. The roar of takeoff is replaced by a ticking sound. The cabin is one long tube the I assume carries sound along its length so why is it more peaceful 'forward' of the engines?

Compu food : Silicon made my sandwich

This 'machine built' food movement is fascinating. You know when you visit a takeaway food joint, and they ask you for your name, which is then scribbled onto the packaging or receipt, so that the patron can be brought together with correct food item. What if the food when it is delivered is shaped like your name??? See also... ME 135 Sandwich Maker burritob0t-hands-on-video 3d-chocolate-printer-sadly-arrives-too-late-to-churn-out-easter-bunnies

Lost in translation

Image
I was spending some time in the Reno office between plane trips a long while back. I was doing some prototype sketches and needed an eraser. I visited reception and asked one of the young women who was sitting at the front desk if she had ‘a rubber?’ That's what we call lumps of plastic that rub out pencil marks in Oz. She and her equally fresh faced friend went bright red and caught a fit of the girlish giggles. Taken aback at the reaction, I again asked if they had ‘a rubber’ that I could borrow. They cracked up and one of them refused to even look up at me from behind her hand. I ran the phrase through my mind but still couldn't see what was so funny, 'a rubber, you know, to rub out pencil marks!' Then it hit me. 'You think I mean condom' I said and these two shy American belles’ went several shades redder and shushed me while nodding and laughing. It’s funny how different cultures, even if they are close variations of ‘W

Luxor : Las Vegas

Image
The Luxor hotel in Vegas is based on an Egyptian theme and it’s pretty impressive to see a huge black-glazed pyramid rising out of the desert, its entrance guarded by tall Egyptian themed statues. When you enter, you find yourself in a huge open space. The guest accommodation hang from the sloping walls of the tall pyramidal structure. These rooms are reached by walkways which open out into the enclosed space, like long continuous balconies. It’s possible to look down into the sprawling open space of the casino floor below. It’s as though someone turned a hotel inside out. I ate a fine fajita lunch while looking up at these walkways. They looked like huge inverted steps. Chatting to the waitress, I asked whether anyone had ever committed suicide by leaping from one of those walkways? She crouched down beside me and whispered, ‘I have to be quiet, the owners are having lunch right behind you.’ Occasionally patrons do jump she confided, and recently someone had crashed into

Victoria hotel : Melbourne

Very central to Melbourne CBD. I had no problems walking to the hotel from Southern Cross Station . The tiny room I was assigned smelt of cigarettes. I'd specified non smoking when I booked. I'm in no hurry to re-visit. The Victoria Hotel Melbourne an All Seasons Hotel 215 Little Collins Street, Melbourne VIC 3000 1800 331 147 ‎
