Kitchen garden update : Spring 2022

Image
Started planting out the lettuce and coriander that I started in the poly tunnel. Thyme, oregano, and transplanted celery seem to be doing ok.

Planted out my onions this week

Image
The first lot I planted under the tomatoes, and the black birds dug them up as soon as I walked away. The next lot I planted with 'anti bird fences'

Killed my Montys surprise apple tree

Image
Looks like the apple tree got starved of water last year.

Potato update

Green stuff has popped up, so I'm laying them down in the trenches and starting to cover with soil. Less concerned with the birds making a mess so I'll remove the net.

Digging up the carrots

Image
Good crop of carrots this year. They seem to be heading off to seed, so I'm digging them all up and freezing them to make room for the tomatoes.

Planted out a few test corn and tomato seedlings...

...to see if they will survive this early in the spring.

Checking in with the seedlings

Looking good so far. Still waiting for some action from the capsicums. Onions got a bit toasted. Added some bricks to smooth out the temp highs and lows. Discovered that slugs like to crop tomatoes off at the stem, and that they like to spend the day lurking under the dirt pots.

Lettuce update

I’ve had this little patch out on one of the main gardens as an experiment. Seems to be doing ok, but the forecast is for some very cold weather for the next week, so I’ve put some plastic covers over them. The patch in the kitchen garden didn’t do very well. I think that there was too little sun. Will try again when the sun travelling closer to summer track.

Having another go at potatoes

Have chosen a permanent spot for the potatoes, and planted some desiree. The birds have been having a great ol time in this spot, so I’ve put a net over to keep them off till hopefully, some green appears.
