Awhi farm : Permaculture course project : The village

As part of the Permaculture coarse I was participating in a Awhi farm, I was placed into a group of three. Our mission was to develop a plan for the village area. This is a horseshoe of shacks that Awhi farm is in the process of converting to accommodation.

Pee Posts

Line of lemon trees
Linen screen spiraled around to provide a screen
Highly visual reminder to pee in the environment
Instructions on where the pee post is to be 'planted' are sown into the fabric of the screen



Invisible structure

Annotate the village
Large map on walls facing onto main drive and 'shortcut' directing people to functions within the village
Instructions on managing the storage area are painted on everything within the room
Stencil phone number on shelf underneath bed linen so customers can call up when things run out.

The management treasure map
Turn the management of the village into a game
Laminated so the it survives out side and so it can be scribbled upon.
Who ever take on the position, be it for a day or more receives a large, laminated map.
Attached to map are a mobile phone, pen, and keys.

Notes on tasks that must be completed such as 'check linen'
Position of campers tent can be noted, or used to direct campers to desired location

This map details everything that someone might need to know about running the village:
  • Url for email to contact visitors
  • Url for online spreadsheets
  • Url for online calendar
  • Important phone numbers such as voice mail access
  • Map showing location of everything within the village
  • Check-list for each day such as 'move pee point screen'
  • Quality assurance check-list for humans
Weekly check-list

For instance...
Compulsory Monday meeting to organise week, get feedback, assign tasks.



Scribble side
Consumables: list of things that need to be restocked such as tea or towels
Weekly calendar: to note down events. Any thing that happens after the current week should be noted in the 'online' calendar.
On the back there are areas for 'things to do'.




Convert camper to store and cafe. Build composting shower and laundry
Fire pit on left, games area on right
Move the isolated shed to join the horseshoe formation
Move two sheds hidden in clearing to the horseshoe
Create a 'shade garden'
Remove the washing line and add a fire pit

I’ve dug up a bit out of an old travel journal.   One night while tucked up in our beds, all eight guys were woken by loud female shouting, out in the stairwell. A truly sublime pair of unfettered bosoms, filled to the quivering liquid brim with booze, burst through the door. She was atmospherically rim lit by light spilling in through the open doorway as she bounced into the room, and planted rank alcoholic kisses on the guy occupying the bed nearest the door. A girlfriend appeared and dragged our invader back to her room. A heavy, round silence closed around us and when it seemed that no more action would unfold, one of the guys on a bottom bunk got up and closed the dorm door. On another occasion, I was woken by someone moving close to my bed. Something must have been up, cause the guy that sleeps below me usually doesn’t interrupt my slumber. A head was moving around in the dark, and I recognised its silhouette as the young guy who occupies the lower bunk across the room.

Grape update: Jan

The grapes have started to ripen.... Which means my competition with the birds is on. The local black birds don't seem to be concerned with how sweet the fruit is. They will happily eat the green unripe grapes. I've noticed them swallow fruit whole so I don't think they care about taste. Word seems to be being passed about. The number of visitors seems to be increasing as the month slips by. I have been protecting individual grape bunches with plastic mesh bags. Ran out of bags so tried to protect the rest with a net.       These birds are diabolically sly and managed to muscled through gaps. I've purchased some more bags and now what is left of the crop has some sort of protection. Found that the birds have now started to pull the bags off, so I'm securing them with clothes pegs.
