Riverboat country : four : Mississippi
The sales guy and Stu had found the locally infamous 'Red Dog.' Our Stu likes a game of ‘stick’ and he quickly partners up with the Sales dude, and they strike up a game with a local and his sister, who just happened to be related to the local ‘organised crime’ boss. They were his kids.
Well Stu had been at
his best roughhousing, Aussie 'blokeyness' that night, and had been
giving this local girl a pretty hard time. She would demand that he
play his shot but he would be in the middle of a conversation and he
would ‘wave her down.’ He had been rubbing her the wrong way,
mentally and physically all night. I'm told that this woman expected,
and got instant special attention in that part of town.
Stu’s ambivalence had
made quite an impression.
Stu was unconscious for
most of the next day so I did some reading. I also explored the
‘forbidden’ beach which as it turns out, was the stomping grounds
for the gang that this notorious couple hung out with.
The fear our local
contact had, was that if Stu ventured down there, we might have had
to detour through the hospital on our way to the airport.
At one stage that
morning I sat on the porch which over looked the street, and watched
the cars driving past. I wondered if one was going to stop, and thugs
would emerge looking for an Aussie bloke who they had a ‘message’
for.
We eventually made our
meeting which was postponed for the next day.
